Certificate in Catholic Religious Studies

Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, in cooperation with the Office of Catholic Education, Secretariat for Catholic Education, Archdiocese of Philadelphia, offers a program of courses in Catholic theology for Catholic school teachers and others interested. The program is designed to foster greater knowledge and deeper appreciation of the Catholic faith among those engaged full-time in the ministry of teaching and others interested in a clearer understanding of the faith.

The Certificate in Catholic Religious Studies consists of eighteen undergraduate credits:

  • One course in the Old Testament
  • One course in the New Testament
  • One course in Theology
  • One course in Moral Theology
  • Two electives

A maximum of six undergraduate credits in Catholic Religious Studies from other colleges and universities may be accepted towards the certificate. Courses taken more than six years before the request is made or in which a grade of at least “C” has not been attained will not be accepted in transfer. Requests to transfer credits should be directed to the Academic Dean.
The program should be completed within a three-year period, pending the availability of the required courses. Credits accumulated from courses taken more than six years past are not accepted toward the awarding of the certificate.

Roman Catechetical Diploma from the Congregation for the Clergy

In accord with the General Catechetical Directory published by the Congregation for the Clergy, Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary has undertaken the task of catechetical formation. The Seminary recognizes the need for continuing theological formation in doctrinal, anthropological and methodological matters. With the approval of the Congregation for the Clergy, the Seminary grants a diploma to those students who have completed twenty-four credits in the area of Religious Studies, certifying that they are academically trained catechists in conformity with the principles of the General Catechetical Directory.

The curriculum for the Roman Catechetical Diploma includes eighteen credits completed as part of the Certificate in Catholic Religious Studies (as prescribed above) and two additional elective courses chosen by the student from among the various undergraduate courses in Sacred Scripture and Catholic Theology offered in the Religious Studies Division.
Transfer credits attained outside the Seminary are not applicable to the Roman Catechetical Diploma.

All courses for the Certificate in Catholic Religious Studies and the Roman Catechetical Diploma are available online each semester.
